Performers

Kodo, Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble

Kodo, Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo are forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. The taiko is something you experience viscerally as the sound of the drum travels from the player and reverberates in the body of the listener. Since the group’s debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo’s ongoing “One Earth Tour” has brought the experience of the taiko to 47 countries around the world for over 5,500 total performances. Spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third resting and preparing new material on Sado Island, Kodo strives to both preserve and reinterpret traditional Japanese performing arts as they develop new styles that transcend all genres and borders. Since 1988, Kodo has had the pleasure of inviting artists they have met in their travels back to their home of Sado Island to engage in unprecedented musical collaborations at their annual music festival “Earth Celebration.”

Leonard Eto

Leonard Eto

Born in New York, Eto joined Kodo in 1984. He not only performed and composed for the group, but also lead the company as musical director. Leonard’s new ways of staging and performing taiko influenced not only Kodo and subsequent taiko groups in Japan, but also well-known entertainment formations and other areas of the Western music scene. In 1992, Leonard left Kodo to pursue a solo career. Since then, he has been active as a performer internationally in over 50 countries, including his appointment as ”Japan Cultural Envoy” sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2013. Since his solo debut concert “Leo Project,” he has continued to realize numerous collaboration projects with a variety of different artists that display his unique worldview.

Suar Agung

Suar Agung

An orchestra of Jegog, giant bamboo percussion instruments, Suar Agong originated from the Jembrana region in west Bali, Indonesia, known for its wealth of folk music and spirituality. Meaning “Great Light,”the legendary Suar Agung was resurrected by I Ketut Suwentra, after once being squelched during the Dutch colonial period. The members of the ensemble are usually farmers, but have received worldwide acclaim through their dazzling musicality. Profits from their performances are put towards the building and repairs of public facilities, as a group dedicated to the fulfillment and promotion of their community and region.
