Taiko & Dance |Minami Katabe Ontaiko

Introduction

The Ontaiko from Sado’s Minami Katabe region is a vigorous style of taiko drumming that is characterized by choreography set to the beat. It is always played in April festivities, and the performances of those who have been practicing the form since childhood are an extraordinary sight! Instead of beating the front end of the drum with energy, it is a form that accentuates the buoyant playing of the drumsticks. These movements are quite dance-like, so anyone interested in taiko and dance would be perfect for this workshop. During this session, participants will explore mukashidaiko which has a slower tempo as well as the light-hearted and lively sodaiko. Move your body, shout out and experience joy welling up from the bottom of your soles alongside the locals from Minami Katabe!
