Arte y Solera x Kodo

It’s been 3 years since Kodo collaborated with this flamenco company on Desnudo vol. 10, which created a stir in Tokyo’s Yoyogi. Now, Arte y Solera come to EC! This long-awaited collaboration unfolds at Shukunegi Community Hall.

Mayumi Kagita

Kagita encountered flamenco as a student at Japan Women’s Physical Education College as a dance major, and in 1990 she was awarded the Suzuko Kawakami Spanish Dance New Artist Award. After studying with Keiko Sato and Tai Yamazaki, she went to Spain. In 1998, upon her return to Japan, she was awarded the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival New Artist Award for her “Lemon Elegy ~ The Life of Chieko.” She won an Award for Excellence at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival in 2001 for “Flamenco Sonezaki Double Suicide” and was invited to perform in Festival de Jerez in Spain, where her performances were enthusiastically received. That same year, she won the grand prize at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival for “Arte y Solera Delight” and in 2006 she was selected as one of the “100 Japanese people respected by the world” by Newsweek Japan. In 2013 she was invited again to Festival de Jerez where she performed “Love Is Everything” to great acclaim, and she starred in the new “Dojoji” (2014) and “infinito ~limitless~” (2015). She continues to be admired and lauded by audiences and critics alike for her exceptional physical expression. She heads Arte y Solera Mayumi Kagita Hiroki Sato Flamenco Dance Company with Hiroki Sato.

Hiroki Sato
Sato began studying under Mayumi Kagita in 1992. He was awarded the Suzuko Kawakami Spanish Dance New Artist Award in 1996. He performed in “Flamenco Sonezaki Double Suicide” in the role of Tokubei, which received high praise from Spanish press in 2004. That year, he also received the grand prize at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival for “Arte y Solera Delight.” In 2006 he was selected as one of the “100 Japanese people respected by the world” by Newsweek Japan. In 2013 and 2014, he choreographed and starred in the flamenco scene in the kabuki play “Goemon” directed by Ainosuke Kataoka; he has also choreographed flamenco dance for Tsubasa Imai solo performance, NHK ” New Year Opera Concert” and Takarazuka Yukigumi’s “Don Juan,” led workshops and performances for the disabled, and engaged in many other activities to display his talents. Not only are his love and knowledge for flamenco profound, but he is actively taking on new projects to push the flamenco form to new frontiers.
