Instructor

Claire Okamoto (African dancer)
Okamoto grew familiar with dancing as a child, growing up in a rich musical environment with a percussionist as a father. At the age of 17 she began creating her own dance pieces inspired by her global experiences of traveling the world and performed her work on stages nationally and internationally. Since she encountered the deep roots of the people who lived steeped in earth-shaking sounds and life energy when she traveled to Africa in 2000, she has regularly spent more than half of every year in Guinea, in West Africa. She joined the dance company Les Merveilles de Guinée based in the capital of Conakry as the company’s first-ever Japanese dancer. She has performed as a dancer in many promotional videos of local musicians, held the workshop tour Douniyah~Life Connected in Guinea annually, and led other initiatives to serve as a cultural bridge between Japan and Guinea. When she is living in Japan, she is active nationally as a dance instructor. The dance form with the heart of Douniyah is popular all over Japan.
