About the Niibo Area
The Niibo area is located in the central part (Kuninaka) of Sado Island and is a region where rice making is popular.
Known as “The town where the Toki lives”, there are many opportunities to see them in the wild. While Niibo is developing as an area they keep on protecting the Toki trough Toki related facilities such as “Toki no Mori Park” and “Sado Toki Protection Center”.
The local people warmly welcome all the visitors!
Local cuisine and hands-on experience with the unique folk arts, enjoy the culture of the locals.
Harigoma: Astride a wooden horse’s neck, a man dances and delivers messages of celebration accompanied by jiuta traditional music, while going from door to door. This is an essential traditional performing art at the New Year and other celebratory events. A unique black mask with distorted cheeks, used in Harigoma in the Aikawa area, is said to imitate the face of Tajima Mikata, who was the most active mining engineer at the Aikawa gold and silver mines during the early Edo Period (17th century).
Onidaiko: Onidaiko, or Ondeko, is a quintessentially Sado traditional performing art. It is offered on many occasions, rituals and festivals in Sado, to pray for the year’s good harvest or catch, and the well-being of families.
Noroma Puppet Theatre: Sado is home to three kinds of puppet theatre: Sekkyo Puppet Theatre, Noroma Puppet Theatre, and Bunya Puppet Theatre. These are all designated Japan’s Tangible Folk Cultural Properties in the name of puppet theatre in Sado. The Noroma puppet is told in a rustic Sado dialect.
Local Cuisine: Perfect for the hot summer days, try the local “Doujo-jiru”.
