Introduction

Last December Kenta Nakagome encountered a long-admired artist Seitaro Kuroda for a conversation interview in Coyote magazine. Now, this special performance was designed as a continuation of that meeting. Seitaro Kuroda, who participated in live painting performances in the early days of Earth Celebration, teams up with charismatic Tatsuya Nakamura, former drummer of Blankey Jet City, and Kenta Nakagome for the first ever improvisation session by this trio!

Performers’ profiles

Seitaro Kuroda

Kuroda was born in Osaka in 1939. After a succession of various occupations including working as a crew member on a U.S. military war ship, he founded K2 with Keisuke Nagatomo in 1969. In 1994 he began illustrating “Akiyuki Noasaka / Collection of War Fables” which was then made into 12 films. In 2004 he founded the Pikadon Project, and since then has conducted numerous live paintings, murals, and illustration classes both nationally and internationally. Following the earthquake of 2011, he has launched live poster events in Kobe, Osaka, Morioka, and Minami Sanriku with proceeds donated to relief support. He is currently designing murals for temporary housing for victims of the quake. His books include Okoru Inu MAD DOGS (Iwanami Publishers), Hi no Hanashi (The Story of Fire), Mizu no Hanashi (The Story of Water), Tsuchi no Hanashi (The Story of Dirt) (Ishikaze Publishers), and Oshiete Kudasai, Nosaka-san (Please Teach Me, Mr. Nosaka) (Switch Publishing).

Tatsuya Nakamura

Formerly of Blankey Jet City, Nakamura is an exceptional drummer. Though his primary focus currently is his solo performance activities, he is also in a trans-genre group called MANNISH BOYS with Kazuyoshi Saito (vocals, guitar), as well as The Golden Wet Fingers with Yuusuke Chiba (guitar) and Akinobu Imai (guitar), SPEEDER-X the battle band with KenKen (bass), the day with Reichi Nakaido (guitar) and Ko1 Tsutaya (keyboard), FRICTION, TWIN TAIL, and his own project LOSALIOS. Asides from being an active member in numerous bands, he also passionately pursues collaborations with visual artist Seitaro Kuroda on live paintings, and butoh artist Min Tanaka on live compositions. Nakamura is also an actor, having appeared in Bullet Ballet (2000, dir. Shinya Tsukamoto), Namidasousou (2006, dir. Nobuhiro Doi). His starring role in The Blood of Rebirth (dir. Toshiaki Toyoda) garnered acclaim for his powerful presence. In 2010 he appeared in the NHK Taiga drama RYOUMADEN. He is known for his innate eclectic abilities and is active in a wide range of disciplines.

Kenta Nakagome

Member of Kodo Taiko Performance Company. Kenta Nakagome entered the Kodo Apprentice Centre in 2004 and became a Kodo member in 2007. He is known for his performances in such pieces as Miyake and Yatai-bayashi. He is an orthodox taiko player whose powerful, energetic performances make him a favorite with audiences across the globe. He also serves as an instructor to childrens’ taiko workshops in school workshop performances.
