This workshop is for experienced shinobue (bamboo flute) players and will focus on honing skills to create better sound with the instrument. To understand the tone quality of the bamboo flute properly, all participants will be provided with a matching pitch #6 (roppon-choshi utamono) flute to use at the workshop. You’ll learn Motofumi Yamaguchi’s secrets of sound, posture, and breathing, et al and create better sound with the group.
Motofumi Yamaguchi joined Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in 1980 and was one of the founding members of Kodo in 1981. He began to study fue (Japanese flute) on his own and he has become a featured fue, kokyu (Japanese violin), koto and shamisen player on stage with Kodo. In the past he acted as Kodo’s Artistic Director and one of the group’s principal composers, overseeing the group’s stage work and musical direction. In 2009, his first solo album “Ikkan Fugetsu” was released. Using makobue flutes made from local Sado madake bamboo, he plays a wide variety of music, from folk favorites to original songs.
