Taiko / Miyake Taiko ( Miyake Island ) [Workshop Full]

You may know Miyake-style drumming from Kodo performances, but this form finds its origin in the traditional “Miyakejima Kamitsuki Mikoshi Taiko” style of the Kamitsuki Region of Miyake Island. Drumming from a low stance, breathing in time with the base drummer, you’ll feel the spirit of Miyake Island’s unique drumming style with your entire body.

Instructor Profile

Miyakejima Geino Doshikai
This group upholds the ancient tradition of Miyake Island’s “Kamitsuki Mikoshi Taiko.” Members taught this style of drumming to Kodo, which forms the base for their famous stage piece “Miyake.” “Kamitsuki Mikoshi Taiko” is played as an accompaniment for the portable shrines carried during the summer’s “Gozutenno Festival” in the Kamitsuki Region of Miyake Island. The drumming continues from 11:00 am when the festival begins and continues until 8:00 pm when the shrines are returned to their home.
